I Heart New York-Living Your Dream

If you wanna know what it means to have a crappy weekend,ask me! After my super melodramatic and elaborate plans for Saturday were trampledupon by fate (mind you-no humanly intervention, or fault, it was), I had a4-hour screaming, fighting, cursing and regretting session. It is yet to takeany direction and I really don’t wanna spill the beans about that particularmatter, so I shall spare you the details. Anyway, so during that horridepisode, while I was crying like a 2 year old, knee scraped girl, I suddenlyhad the urge to jump out of the bed. As soon as I my feet hit the floor, asuffocating black blanket enveloped me, knocking me off my feet. It last anano-second, but long enough for me to lose my balance, hit the floor and sprainmy ankle. It swelled, right before my eyes, and hurt like a you-know-what.

Anyway, consequently I was tied to the bed, in fact couch tobe precise, with a book and limited access to TV (my friend’s grandfather diedtoday, and they live next door). Anyway, because of limited options, I pickedup a book I bought about 3 months back from Sunday Bazaar. It isn’t my kind ofa book-thus the neglect. I like romance, and it’s crazy-awesome if it’shistorical!

But this blog post is not about my preference in novels, butone particular novel that I read today. It was by Lindsey Kelk, called I HeartNew York. It is an exclusive glamour edition, and was my companion for the day.

My sister is getting married in a month-and all of us at home are going BONKERS!

Whoever says women like shopping should meet us 5. We are made to go through yards and yards of cloth, laces and accessories everyday, for hours, and we hate it! We torture our feet beyond endurance by walking around crowded malls, looking for this or that, and then come home to realize we still have 90% of the things undone; and what's worse, this 90% doesn't go down! Every day, these digits smirk at us, and we gear up for yet another day of shopping malls, bazaar and tailors with the intention of beating these painful digits down. But, sadly, we fail.

With just a month to prepare, we had to take off in the 5th gear. And the speed is certainly taxing. We have mastered the art of multi-tasking, making lengthy lists and doing bits for each other. But long hours spent outside has us tan already, dirt etched deep into our feet and we don't know how it feels to be bright and fresh.

A word for you: If you have to prepare for a wedding, please know that arranging for bridal and your own clothes is going to be a PAIN in the ASS!

*Loud honking* Okay, so my sister is getting rather impatient and we need to get going-yes, to yet another tiring shopping trip on a freaking SUNDAY. Well, see you around I guess.

We all love food. And there is nothing half as irritating as being invited over for dinner, only to be served something like sawdust and wood. So, before you are stuck in an awkward situation of gulping down food that you wouldn't have even if it were the last thing on earth, make sure you know who is cooking. There are ways to identify a bad cook before trying their food. Here are some of the signs you might have a doozy of a meal coming your way.

1. The person has long acrylic manicured nails: "Not only do I not believe that any culinary school worth its salt would allow a student to attend classes sporting long/fake nails," says inaplasticcup. "I also think that (sanitary issues aside), there is a sort of preciousness to the maintenance of those nails that might very well keep a person from becoming a GREAT cook."

2. They've got a pantry filled with iffy ingredients: "Too many cans of processed ___," sums up caviar_and_chitlins. "If I look into a pantry, and see lots of cream o' crap soup, powdered sauce mixes and the like, few good (and dated) spices, and little to no good veg in the 'fridge, then I'm pretty sure dinner isn't going to be very good." A bad refrigerator is equally ominous, says givemecarbs, bemoaning the sight of the "pre-grated Parmesan cheese of doom," while others quail at the sight of ReaLemon and bottled garlic.

3. Their kitchen's too clean, with, as givemecarbs says, "pristine state-of-the-art appliances that just scream 'don't mess me up.'" An unused oven is another bad sign. "I went to a friend's for a potluck and turned her range on to heat my quiches and the range instructions (still in their plastic) began to burn," says smartie. "About 10 minutes later there was a funny smell of burning plastic and my friend said 'oh no we don't use the oven.'"

4. They cling to a belief that any one ingredient, such as bacon, truffle oil, or Sriracha, makes any dish better. tatamagouche, who actually enjoys both truffles and truffle oil, complains that "ubiquity devalues it. Besides, half the time, people use too much or too little truffle oil." Samuelinthekitchen calls Sriracha "red hipster sauce. Like hipsters, the belief that Siracha improves everything is about 40 percent true and 60 percent somebody tedious saying it."

5. They don't salt their food. "As if that's such a virtue," sneers Cakegirl. "Food without ANY salt equals food without flavor. Also, a lot of people say 'I never cook with salt,' not realizing that they cook with a lot of processed foods (canned tomatoes, condiments, etc.) that contain plenty of salt."

6. The names Sandra Lee or Rachael Ray come up. "I see a lot of cooks who ... watch a lot of TV, make no effort at research beyond that, order the same handful of things every time they eat out, and dub themselves a master chef," says cowboyardee. "So fair or unfair, this is the truth—if I discuss food with someone for the first time and they voluntarily—without prompting—bring up Rachael Ray or another TV host in the first minute, I assume they're one of the types you described. Until proven otherwise. It's not 100% accurate. But as a rule of thumb, it works."

7. They've got dull knives and poor knife skills. "Especially if someone's been cooking for many years, if there's not a certain fluency to their knife work, I do wonder why they wouldn't shore up on a skill that's such a big part of the process," says inaplasticcup.

8. Their kitchen has a dearth of local ingredients. "If a cook lives in an area with a great ingredient but has never cooked with it, I tend to wonder how they think about their food and cooking," says JeremyEG. "I know a cook who lives on the coast of Maine who has never cooked with shellfish. Not for religious or health reasons but because they don't belong in her special 'pineapple and chicken' recipe."

9. They show a lack of discernment between different styles of the same ingredient, e.g., someone claims they "can't tell the difference" between full-fat yogurt and nonfat, or margarine and butter. "Not that there isn't a place for some of those products, but if you can't tell the difference, then I'd find your cooking abilities suspect," says Ruth Lafler.

10. They make well-done steaks. Need we say more?

Just missed making the list: They have tons of (suspect) "food allergies," they're light beer drinkers, they're followers of Hungry Girl, they've got a refrigerator full of saved ketchup and soy sauce packets, and/or they've got a spice rack with dusty jars of herb and spice blends on it.

Why do guys I dated ages ago try to make their way back into my life now?

I am starting GM diet from tomm, remember? Everyone has been bragging about their wonder soup that accelerates weight loss and does a good job at keep your tummy full as well. After digging through several online resources, this is what I have found:

Ingredients:
6 Large Green Onions
2 Green Peppers
1-2 Cans Diced Tomatoes
1 Bunch Celery
1 Package Lipton Onion Soup Mix
1-2 Cubes of Buillion (if desired)
1 head cabbage

Method:

Cut vegetables into small pieces and cover with water. (V-8 juice and water can be used). Boil fast for 10 minutes. Reduce to simmer and continue cooking until vegetables are tender. Season to taste with salt, pepper,parsley, etc.

You guys won’t believe what my Mom did today! It wasoutrageous and so unacceptable; and if truth be told, a kick right where ithurts.

This is what happened: I come home after a long hard day atwork. I sat to dine with Dad, while she served us. My youngest, blabbermouth ofa sister goes like, “You know that brown dress of yours that you discarded?Chotu (Sister elder to me) took it and she looks gorgeous in it!” I was likeWHAT?? Which brown dress have I discarded, that Chotu looks good in and I havethrown it away still? After hogging down my dinner at 11:00 PM, yes I eat that late,I go to her room and check out her wardrobe. And there I see a dress that Ilike and never threw away! When inquired, Chotu said it was in the pile ofclothes I discarded. She saw it while mom was going through them beforehanding it over to our maid. I marched my way to mom, and asked “Why did youthrow away my brown dress? I LIKE IT and STILL WEAR IT!”

Very non-nonchalantly she replied, “Itdoesn’t fit you nicely anymore. You are FAT!”

*100 bullets go through my body, simultaneously*

(P.S I snatched that dress away anyway. I have, yet again,resolved to start my weight loss regime and will be able to fit back into mybrown dress nicely by New Year’s Eve. See if I don’t!!!)

De-cluttering my Life!

I think people in the age bracket of 20-35 live a life muchdifferent than they did before or after this bracket. It’s a time of many highsand painful lows, success and failure, heartwarming incidents to heartbreakingepisodes, and so much more. We have many people coming in to our lives, andsome leaving as well. We accumulate tons of materialistic possessions at thesame time. Additionally, our emotional streams also face endless upheavals.Amongst all this, how do we, or I, keep my sanity intact? I have been wonderingabout it for a long time. And finally today I have the answer. De-cluttering.

If you are anything like me, you must know what it means to holdon to things. Eid cards from primary and secondary school’s friends, paintedtiles from your summer camp, handful of scrap books, show pieces, pen holdersand other such birthday gifts, and most importantly, pictures. People whobelieve that before the advent of Facebook, pictures weren’t as hyped about asthey are now should meet me. For me, the inception of digital camera is thereason why we see pictures posted here, there and everywhere.

Anyway, coming back to the point, we gather things, people,emotions and relationships over time. Then comes a time when this giganticcollection over powers you. It becomes impossible for you to handle or dojustice to many of the items (relationship included). And this is what I wasgoing through. Too many gifts and cards rolling around and eventually dieing indust, relationships going strong something and then falling apart for some oddreason, and thus, I find myself in a mess. So I decided, it’s time to de-cluttermy life. With all due respect, I draw a line between my life and the baggage.

I have realized over time that I am an emotional eater. When stressed, depressed or frustrated, I eat. No, I hog. Literally!

Anyway, yesterday was a combination day. I was happy and horribly busy at work.

I don't remember much of what I ate, but I shall still list down whatever I remember, and update the list later on if needed:

Glass of skimmed milk = 102

Grilled Sandwich = 262

Chicken Stock (w/o chicken) = 38

Coffee = 90

Total Calories= 492!!

That doesn't seem right. I shall certainly run a check tomm peeps, don't you worry! :D

(P.S I can't recall what I had for lunch. I had super late lunch, which also happened to be my dinner. I shall try to think and revise the list later certainly!)

Sooner I make a schedule, sooner I can get behind it!

Day 1: Tuesday, October 11, 2011

All charged up for my weight loss regime, I started my daywith 1tbsp lemon in hot water. 10 mins later, I painfully swallowed omelet. Ihate eggs, FYI. All forms, sized and types. Trying to save up calories, Iskipped tea and planned to have green tea at work.

Day continued, and my stomach started grumbling as soon asthe clock striked one. Mentally deciding on the vegetarian bit of the menu, I entered the elevator(yes, I know. It should have been stairs but damn my habit!) and in thosenano-seconds, food monster took over. Zombie-me ordered chicken charga withparatha. Chef at my workplace is yet to come across the concept of grilling, soit was fried. Guiltily, I enjoyed chewing the meat and almost-munching onbones. I tried to maintain distance from the oil-dripping paratha, but pairedwith raita, it was impossible to resist and I ended up having it all.

When you are at a workplace that has 24/7 active kitchen,and you can be served as much and as often food as you like, you are bound todevelop some really bad habits. After my meal, I usually crave something sweet.I satisfy myself with seasonal, fresh fruits-most of the times. Today, however, food-monster wasin me and I ended up ordering Chocolate Meringue Custard. It was chocolatemousse, with pineapple and whipped cream on top. I discarded the cream andshared the dessert with my food-mates. I still ended up have 3 tbsps of thatsinful delicacy.

Coming back to my seat (again via elevator), I ran for a mugof green tea to swallow down guilt eating me away. I was supposed to be on afreaking diet! While sipping green tea, I looked for a gym slot but couldn’tfind any available. Oh, we have a gym at our workplace, accompanied with asalon and pool-table. Coming back to the point-gym was closed due to monthlymaintenance. Thus, with 5 kgs of WRONG food in me, I sat at my desk and spilled my gutsout to Introspective.

Hunger pangs returned at 5:00. Being a good girl, I had aplate full of freshly cut, seasonal fruits. Primarily I had banana, pear andmelon. I cannot stomach apples and wasn’t in a mood for papayas, so let thembe.

As it happens, my flu is in full rage. I have a stack highpile of snotty tissues. To deal with it, I had a cup of coffee (from the coffeemachine) with a tsp of sugar. And guess what? It hasn’t helped one tiny bit.

My Very Own Weight Loss Regime

This blog has been with me through thick and thin. It has been my way of sharing happiness and dealing with hardships at the same time. So it is only expected that I share my new, and hopefully temporary journey with it.

Its nott he first time I am attempting weight loss. It has actually been a while since I have been playing around with this idea. But now, its time. Its high time.

Let me tell you why its time. My sister is getting married and I want to wear a sari. And there is nothing half as dreadful as an ugly bulge, however big or small. With so many important and life changing events around the corner, I don't want to be the 'fat' one.

On top of it, I am 23. How old do I look? At least 26. And how old do I feel? At least 36. With work stress and all, I hardly have time for myself. But from today onwards, I want to change it all.

Thus, I shall be sharing my food journal, workout regime and weight loss progress right here, with all you out there.

Feel free to jump on the bandwagon and share your secrets.

Ideal Weight: 140 lbs

Lets start losing!

Some important pointers:

Cut down bread and rice
Forget about chocolates, chips, cookies and the usual junk I munch on
At least 30 minutes of cardiovascular workout

Experts are clueless.

What got my attention, and waslisted on top as well, was the root cause of inflation that has been jumpingour economy's backbone the wrong way. It said that we print Rs.300 crore, EVERYDAY! 7 days a week and 365 days a year, a developing economy like ours mintsuseless paper and calls it money.

For all those who aren't well versedin boring concepts of economics, let me simplify the message for you. You livein a community of 10 people. You are the only 10 people on planet. 3 of youproduce milk, 3 produce eggs and 4 bake bread. You all have enough money (papercurrency) to purchase the produced goods. Let’s say, your cumulative monetary wealthis equal to Rs.100.

Well, that is the only explanation I could come up with. Otherwisetell me, what does one son have that thousands of men, women and childrencombined cannot offer to the government and get them to act on their commitmentof providing ‘safe, secure homeland for all natives of Pakistan’.

On August 28^th 2011, Punjab Governor Latif Khosa saidthe kidnapping incident was the third major occurrence during this month, whichwas a matter of concern. Really? So all the men butchered during the recentwave of insanity and inhumanity are to be discounted as mere ‘casualties’?Their lives, or the uprooted families, do not hold any significance to thehigher ups in the government?

If, for some time I ignore my rage against this injusticeand be thankful that at least one man is getting the kind of uproar,investigation and protection that every citizen of Pakistan deserves, thesituation appears even more daunting. Despite the family’s political status,resources, and connections at the right places, what happened? Regardless ofmaking tall claims, the Lahore police has failed to make any breakthrough inthe case even after more than 36 hours. Sources in Investigation Wing of LahorePolice said that seven investigation teams had been constituted under theCapital City Police Officer Ahmed Raza Tahir and SSP Investigation Abdul RazzaqCheema on the orders of IG Punjab.

Taseer clan had subtly pointed fingers at Taliban andextremist groups. Investigations add family disputes as the possible reason forabduction to the list. Police, investigators, forensic experts and mediapersonnel have been flocking together to get to the bottom of this case. Yet,no progress is apparent.

What kind of message does it hold for common people like youand me? Where do we go from here? Should we be patriotic or flee the countrylike hordes of men already have?

Inequality, injustice, terror and massacre will continueuntil checks for accountability are put in place. This article is not meant todisregard or look down at the search for abducted son of Taseer clan. By allmeans, I feel for the distressed mother, wife, sister and brother, and I praythat he is recovered, unharmed, soon. But at the same time, my prayers also goout to the other, underprivileged lot of families who have lost their breadearners, laughter, happiness and hope during this mindless butchery season.

Let me share something interesting. I shared this statusupdate on Facebook today:

“Was Shahbaz Taseer made of platinum or was a godsend? Why 7search committees for him and none to stop the madness, mass killings, terrorin Karachi? Its time they realize that maybe this injustice is what got the mankidnapped in the first place...We want our stable city, with security back! “

Three absolutely unexpected comments that came were as follows:

Comment 1: Shahbaz Taseer belongs to PPP!Punjab Govt currently being ruled by Sharif Brothers!! PPP had to blame SharifBrothers - so they might have gotten him kidnapped themselves! In short it’sbloody POLITICS :)

Comment 2: Shaheen, Shahbaz Taseer is a mere diversioncreated so that our good for nothing government can get busy with this newissue.

Comment 3: It’s just a new way to get rid of Shariffbrothers by PPP govt... The govt wants Punjab to be busy in this new drama asthey always put Sindhi's in similar circumstances... Shahbaz Taseer kahin farmhouse mai 10 bachiyon k sath pool mai baytha daru pii raha hoha oor mazay kerraha hoga :p
